Like humans, pets can also be diagnosed with diabetes. This blog will attempt to educate and inform pet owners about pet diabetes, what pets are most at risk, the signs of diabetes to watch out for, and how hemp oil can help!
What is Diabetes?
According wellnessurban.com, diabetes is a chronic condition where the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Diabetes leads to high blood sugar levels, which can be detrimental to your pet’s organs, nerves, and blood vessels.
What Pets Are At Risk?
The American Veterinary Medical Association states the onset of diabetes in dogs and cats can occur at any age. With that being said, diabetic dogs are usually 4-14 years old, and diabetic cats are age 6 and up. Interestingly, diabetes occurs in female dogs twice as often as male dogs. According to pets4homes.co.uk, these dog breeds have been found to be more at risk:
- Miniature Schnauzers
- Australian Terriers
- Standard Schnauzers

How Hemp Can Help
There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 is diagnosed when your pet’s pancreas isn’t creating enough insulin. Your vet will instruct you to give them insulin shots.
Type 2 is diagnosed when your pet has become resistant to insulin and doesn’t require insulin shots, but can require medication.
Additionally, hemp has been shown to help pets with Type 2 diabetes by reducing the hormone called resistin that causes the body to become resistant to insulin.
