Last summer, my husband and I had to cut our vacation a couple days short because our young German Shepherd came down with a nasty case of allergic contact dermatitis. In short, it was an incredibly awful experience. We never thought itching could be more annoying and painful to watch. If only we had known about how CBD can help relieve the symptoms of contact dermatitis, we might have been able to stay for the duration of our trip. Read on to learn more!
Causes Of Contact Dermatitis
Your pet can get a rash from pretty much anything. Mike Clark from dogtime.com writes that medication, food, grass, dust mites, soaps, plants, gardening supplies/chemicals, insect bites, creams/lotions, and household cleaners are just scratching the surface of what can cause contact dermatitis in your dog or cat. Because of the array of possible causes, it can be very difficult to determine what is the exact trigger for your pet. Working with a vet can help determine and narrow down the possible cause(s).
The common symptoms of contact dermatitis in your pet are:
- Patches of soreness
- Alopecia (hair loss)
- Lesions or ulcers
- Redness or changes in skin color
- Scaly, dry, or thickened skin
- Discharge from the affected area
- Wounds from scratching, chewing, or licking
- Runny eyes or nose
- Secondary bacterial infection
How CBD Can Help
CBD may offer healing in two significant ways:
- Inflammation – CBD expert Sarah Potts explains it well:
“CBD oil elevates the endocannabinoid 2-AG. This endocannabinoid binds mainly to the CB2 receptor that regulates the immune system. What 2-AG does is travels backward toward the cannabinoid receptor through a process called retrograde signaling, and it tells the receptor to stop sending out so many attack cells which results in reduced inflammation.”
- Pain – CBD may help reduce your pet’s sensitivity to pain by interacting with their endocannabinoid system.
